Navigating the urban
jungle just became
a whole lot easier.
The GPS-based navigation systems of today are not always as helpful as you'd probably like – especially not where they're needed the most: in dense urban areas. Simply put, with high-rises, multi-level highways and tunnels blocking the signal, relying solely on your GPS is not always a good idea. And if you're in the parking garage – well, then you'd better find your own way out.
Unless, of course, your car is equipped with Map Aided Positioning, MAP by NIRA. Using advanced signal processing and sensor fusion, MAP by NIRA combines wheel speeds and other automotive grade sensors with digital map information to provide an accurate estimate of a vehicle's absolute position and heading. Now, this is possible even without support from GPS or other external positioning services – and so it works both outdoors and indoors. Best of all, the performance is similar to GPS positioning systems outdoors and laser scanning systems indoors.
In fact, if you're in a parking garage, MAP by NIRA can even decide which level you're on. Which, of course, is pretty useful for helping you find your way to the desired exit.
What's more, MAP by NIRA can also be combined with GPS, resulting in a very robust, reliable and accurate positioning system which will never really lose track of the vehicle's exact position – even if the GPS signal would be lost for a longer while, for instance in an urban canyon.
To think, until now, positioning has been all about satellites. When really all the information you need is right there, in the car.
