NHTSA granted VW/Audi petition regarding Audi A6 compliance with FMVSS138

Monday, May 23rd 2011, US traffic safety administration NHTSA finally decided about the assessment of the compliance test results carried out with an Audi A6 equipped with NIRA TPI in June 2009.

During the testing in San Angelo, Texas, all deflation tests went perfectly as expected but in the final malfunction tests, there had been an issue about illuminating and re-illuminating the malfunction lamp. The root cause were two independent malfunction detection functions in the vehicle. Audi/VW have reacted immediately and irrespective of the minor impact, modified the functions in series production and in parallel, applied for “inconsequential noncompliance” as the traffic or passenger safety had never been at stake.

NHTSA has now officially declared that they share this view, follow the argumentation and consequentially, grant the petition from Volkswagen - see the extract from the Federal Register.
